The Sunny Solution!

The Sunny Solution!

The Caribbean is heavily dependent on oil and gas for electricity today. In this fossil fuel powered society that we live in today, it seems as though it is the smart choice- this belief comes from its "reliability".

Fossil fuels may be a useful resource today but in the very near future it may not be available to use as comfortably as we do. This is because it is a non-renewable resource- simply, the amount of oil and gas used cannot be replaced, not in this lifetime anyway.

From an economical point of view, it isn't the smartest for our Caribbean islands either. Let's talk numbers, approximately 90% of Caribbean nations depend on imported oil for energy. This imported oil costs Caribbean countries up to 4 times the amount paid by the United States. That adds up to roughly 10% of a Caribbean countries' GDP. With the tight economy of the Caribbean region, that's ALOT!

There is however, a solution to this situation and it is The Sunny Solution!

Solar energy is a renewable form of energy that is generated from incoming solar radiation. The Caribbean is known for its 3 S's- Sun, Sea and Sand. Solar Energy maximizes the 'Sun' aspect of our Caribbean identity. With our close location to the equator, the sun is in an abundance to Caribbean countries. In Layman's terms, solar energy is the conversion of sunlight into electricity with the use of devices called solar panels. It is also a considerably profitable resource, this is because maintenance costs are low. Evidently, solar powered energy is cheaper than oil and gas. With technology today and good investment into the mechanics of utilizing solar power as a main source of energy, solar energy can be a viable option for transitioning the Caribbean from fossil fuel dependency to The Sunny Solution!

No longer will we rely on the expensive and harmful energy that is fossil fuels. The oil and gas industry is eminently low on stocks and responsible for countless environmental disasters. Instead consider this the means to an end, a cleaner, renewable, cheaper, efficient and environmentally friendly energy source- Solar Energy!
